Engineering & Mathematics Major | Spelman College
Q&A: Engineering Major – Reyla P (2:06)
“I chose math and engineering as my major because I love challenges. Math is something that you can always find different ways to solve a problem. And it’s interesting to me to see how everybody’s thought process is.”
I went to college because I love learning. So for me, it was a natural instinct. I love discovering new things, finding out why things work the way they do, finding new solutions to problems.
The best thing about college for me is learning about myself and finding new friends also. Growing up, I was actually very shy, and one thing that college taught me was how to open up and express myself.
For girls who are interested in figuring out how they can decide on their major, one thing for me was to go after my passion and not just about the money. For me, I really enjoy doing math, and it’s something that makes me happy. So I would say if you’re passionate about dancing or singing, then I think you should go after that.
After Spelman would be to get my master’s in city and regional planning, as well as civil engineering, I would love to be able to work in underdeveloped areas.
The best advice that I would give to a young girl would be to be yourself. I think that this is very important because growing up, you can get caught up into what everybody else is doing and not knowing how to make friends or if you need to dress a certain way or act a certain way to be in a clique or club. And I think the best thing that you could do is just be yourself, because there’s always somebody out there who’s just like you and likes you for you and is willing to be your friend just for the person that you are.
Get out of your comfort zone.
