Topic: Literary Arts Careers
Empowerment Lesson Video: Literary Arts Careers
Supplies:
- Handout from Career Girls, one per student
- Construction paper
- Blank paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Drawing utensils such as markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Video Discussion:
Ask, “What do you think of when you hear the term ‘literary arts’?”
Direct students to turn and talk to a partner. Then, call the class together to discuss their ideas.
Help students understand that a career in the literary arts involves creative writing of stories, poetry, plays, scripts, etc. and may not include ongoing secure employment. Instead, it may involve an artist moving from creative project to creative project or freelancing.
Explore the term freelancing. Have students discuss the pros and cons of working in a series of temporary situations or freelancing vs. securing more traditional employment.
Tell students they will be watching the video titled, Literary Arts Careers. Explain that the video presents role models talking about why girls should consider a career in the literary arts.
After viewing the video, use some or all of the following questions to explore the video content and prepare for the activity:
- What are some literary arts careers?
- Which careers seem the most interesting to you? The least interesting? Why?
- Are there any careers that were new to you? Which ones?
- What are some reasons that students don’t consider a career in the literary arts? How can you discover if those concerns are true?
- How could you learn to prepare yourself for a career in the literary arts?
- Is it possible for a career in the literary arts to include interests you may have in other areas? Explain your answer.
Activity Instructions:
This activity encourages students to think like literary artists and create their own mini pop-up books. It encourages creativity, storytelling, and an appreciation for writing and illustration.
Get ready to become an author and illustrator! You’ll create a mini pop-up book, using your imagination to bring a story to life. This is your chance to explore how writers and artists turn ideas into books!
- Gather the supplies you will need to create your mini pop-up book including a Career Girls handout, construction paper, blank paper, scissors, glue, and drawing utensils.
- Use glue to attach your Career Girls handout to the piece of construction paper. This will make your handout sturdier and more like a book.
- Fold your paper in half along the solid line that says, “fold here”.
- Use scissors to cut the dotted lines.
- Brainstorm a topic for your story. It could be a true story from your life, something pretend, or a retelling of your favorite story in your own words.
- Draw a small picture that represents your story on the blank paper. Cut it out and use glue to attach it to the pop-up section in the middle of your handout. Hint: If you’re not sure what it should look like, peek at the picture on the activity page!
- Now, use the lines on the bottom portion of the handout to write your story.
- When you’re finished, share your mini pop-up book with a classmate and take turns reading each other’s stories. If you enjoyed creating your book, think about exploring literary arts careers like being an author, illustrator, or editor. You might have a future in storytelling!
