mini robot craft project for groups made of aluminum cans toothpicks and brightly colored foam

Craft Mini Robot #2

Craft Mini Robot #2

Topic: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Supplies:

  • Soft drink can, one per student
  • Toothpicks, a few per student
  • Foam beads, a few per student
  • Additional craft materials for decoration such as pom pom balls, pipe cleaners, yarn or string, googly eyes, colored construction paper, tin foil, etc.
  • Tape
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Video Discussion:

Ask, “What is AI?”

Direct students to turn and talk to a partner. Then, ask students to share their ideas with the class.

Work together to come up with a shared definition for artificial intelligence. Note: Merriam-Webster provides two definitions. Anything similar to either of these is fine!

  • A branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers
  • The capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior

Ask, “Has anyone heard of machine learning?” Allow any students with prior knowledge to briefly share. Explain that the video will cover both AI and machine learning.

Tell students they will be watching the video titled Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Explain that the video presents role models explaining artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as talking about the role these concepts will play in the future.

After viewing the video, use some or all of the following questions for discussion:

  • Compare and contrast artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. Which is the most interesting to you? Why?
  • Do you think you would like to have a career in artificial intelligence or machine learning? Why or why not?
  • Why are algorithms so important in artificial intelligence? What types of tasks could you write into an algorithm?
  • How can humans benefit from artificial intelligence? Will some populations benefit more than others? Explain your answer.

Activity Instructions:

Students will continue thinking about artificial intelligence and machine learning by creating their own robot-inspired craft.

Have you ever wondered how robots can help us in our daily lives? Today, you’ll get to design your very own robot and think about how it could solve real-world problems!

  1. Gather the materials you will need for this craft including a soft drink can, toothpicks, foam beads, and other decorative craft supplies.
  2. To create the robot’s wheels, glue two toothpicks together. Hint: The toothpick rod must be long enough that the wheels will not hit the sides of the can when in place.
  3. Thread the foam bead “wheels” onto the rods according to the photos.
  4. Tape the completed wheels to the bottom of the can.
  5. Think about how you want your robot to look. Consider some of the following ideas or come up with your own design!
    • Yarn, string, or ribbon can be used to create hair.
    • Pipe cleaners or rolls of construction paper can be used to create legs, arms, or antenna.
    • Glitter, sequins, and stickers can be used to give your robot a high-tech look or to add designs.
  6. Use the craft supplies to decorate your robot until it looks just right.
  7. Once your robot is complete, take a moment to think about how it could make a difference in the real world. On a blank sheet of paper, answer as many of the following questions as time allows:
    • What tasks would your robot be designed to do?
    • How could your robot help solve a problem or make life easier for people? Be creative—would your robot clean up trash, deliver food, or help with homework?
    • What challenges might your robot face while doing its job? How could it overcome these challenges?
