Topic: Literary Arts Careers

Empowerment Lesson Video: Literary Arts Careers

Supplies:

  • Handout from Career Girls
  • Construction paper
  • Blank paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Markers/crayons/ colored pencils

Video Discussion:

Tell students they will be watching the video titled, Literary Arts Careers. Explain that the video presents role models talking about why girls should consider a career in the literary arts.

After viewing the video, invite students to share specific things they learned about literary arts careers featured in the video and to reflect upon their observations (e.g., "I didn't know that literary arts careers could be so much fun and creative. It would be great to be paid well for doing such an interesting job.").

Activity Instructions:

  1. Each student starts with a handout, a piece of construction paper and a blank piece of paper.
  2. Glue the handout onto the construction paper and fold in half.
  3. Have the students choose a topic for their story. Then, have them draw a small picture representing their story on the blank paper and cut the picture out.
  4. Glue the picture to the cut-out spot in the center of the worksheet.
  5. Have the students write their short story on the worksheet to create their minibook.
