Computer Science Major | Spelman College
Q&A: Computer Science Major – Ariel T (2:01)
“When I first came to Spelman, I was a health science major because I thought I wanted to be a doctor. But my second semester of my freshman year, I took a computer science class where I was coding in Python, and I absolutely fell in love with computer science.”
Be open to changing your major, to finding what’s the best thing for you. But also remember those passions that you have and remember what interests you, so then you can put that all into one thing and create the major that you want or go into the major that you want.
I believe girls should consider going to college because we are needed in this world. Everything that you see around you, everything that is being done around you, there are people like us that need to be in those spaces. So even as a computer science major, I realized that there was a deficit in women and women of color in that industry. So it’s important for girls and women to be in college, so then we can go into those different industries and be the best that we can be and live up to what you want to do, how you can impact the world.
When I decided that I wanted to be a computer science major, I was so nervous to change my major. But I knew that if I wasn’t scared, then it wasn’t the right choice for me. So even if you’re scared, don’t be afraid to make that jump. Take that risk because it’ll be so worth it in the end.
Three things that I love about Spelman, one is definitely the small classes, getting to know your professors, and really them helping you out in any situation. Also, I love being in Atlanta, so there’s always something to do. You can never have a Friday night where you’re just sitting in. You can always find something to do. And three, I love the sisterhood that is present on Spelman’s campus. So if you’re in need of something, there is always someone who is willing to help you out.
Don’t be afraid of who you can become.
